Putting Hammurabi to the Test.

Testing Hammurabi as a Leader

Hammurabi at this point was given a lot of power and a lot of land. It puts Hammurabi to the test because he conquered so much land in such a short time that keeping each of the cities together under one united nation must have been very difficult, seeing that there could be civil unrest in each city. So in order to quell them and restore peace, Hammurabi must have had to expend a lot of resources to maintain his newly acquired empire. Also implementing himself and his government into these cities, after years and years of established government, brings difficulty in keeping the empire under his direct rule. Hammurabi must have had to delegate with those cities to make sure that they remain in his rule. Because Babylonia was so large (reaching the Gulf, both Euphrates, and the Taurus mountains to the north), moving around took a long time, which mean moving messages took longer. In addition, moving soldiers and resources must have taken a long time to traverse from city to city. Keeping track of what is going in each city shows how much work Hammurabi had to do to keep his empire intact.

One solution that Hammurabi used was creating the Code of Laws. This fundamental set of laws that Hammurabi created shows a way to keep all the cities in the empire together. So instead of going back and forth, changing rules and laws, Hammurabi solidifies the cities through the Code of Laws to regulate the people. This also helps keep the local law enforcers to know how to maintain the laws that Hammurabi wanted. Hammurabi uses the Code of Laws to help facilitate the peace in the cities of his empire.

Hammurabi, the king of the first largest empire in Mesopotamia, was tested as the leader of the newly formed empire. With such great power comes great responsibilities. Hammurabi had to be wise enough and crafty enough to make sure that his empire wouldn't dissolve so quickly. He faced many challenges especially cities that were at the borders of his empire and had to make them a cohesive part of his empire. Using the Code of Laws, Hammurabi was able to keep the cities intact and keep Babylonia from breaking at the seems. He was able to implement his laws and government into his empire through his Code of Laws and his leadership.
